Our Refuge
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God. ~ Psalm 62
God is our Refuge.
He has provided for our salvation through the person and work of his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
In Christ, God has been merciful in not giving us what we deserve. Born into the race of Adam, we are great sinners – experts at enjoying the world in a way that denies its maker and perverts his good intentions for its enjoyment. We are as children living in our father’s home who, in spite of every evidence of his presence and authority, deny that he exists – or if we acknowledge him at all, we imagine him as we might wish him to be. As those who have offended the glory of God by mistrusting his goodness and denying him thanks, we deserve a very great punishment. Naturally, the only fitting and just judgment for the infinite offense of any sin is an infinite punishment. But God, in Christ, does not give us what we deserve. Instead he has given Christ what we deserve by pouring out his wrath on Jesus as he hung on the cross.
But God is not only merciful to keep from us what we do deserve, in Christ he has also graciously given us what we don’t deserve, namely, the joy of his eternal presence. Jesus was God’s Beloved Son. When we were born again – that is, when we were born into union with Christ – we were disassociated from Adam and forever associated with Christ. By virtue of our union with God’s beloved Son, we became God’s beloved children, adopted into his family and heirs to all that belongs to Christ. Christ lived a righteous life and as those who are “in Christ” we are righteous before God. Christ suffered the wrath of God and we stand justified before God as those whose guilt has been removed. Christ was raised from the deadhttp://www.thehunterhome.com/?page_id=169 and we have new life in him and the certainty of eternal joy in the presence of God forever.
So, in Christ God is merciful in not giving us what we asked for, and he is gracious in giving to us the infinite joy we rejected. It is a remarkable thing that we know God because it takes a God of lavish mercy and grace to make this knowledge possible. Our salvation rests on him alone. He is our Refuge.
While the single purpose and plan of God unites the two of us in Christ, this gospel has come to us at different times, though different people and different circumstances. The following pages represent each of our stories.
